Observers were set on board of fishing vessels from North Brittanny ports during one full year (1992-93). This study granted by EC Commission (contract CE/DGXIV-C-1 n° 1992/06) was a first approach for assessing French discards in the western English Channel. It identifies the main species discarded and produces a rough estimate of discard rates and size compositions in each métier targeting fish. The major reasons for variability were explained. Size compositions of catches and discards were provided in order to permit better estimates of the mortality induced by fishing operations. Seasonal Sea Surface Temperature (SST) changes in the Western English Channel have been estimated for the previous decades from high-resolution satellite data. Coastal seas, well separated from offshore waters by intense frontal structures, show colder SST by 1 to 2°C in summer. A significant warming trend is observed in the autumn season. This positive trend is stronger offshore, with an annual mean SST increase of 0.32°C/decade, but weaker in coastal waters (0.23°C/decade), where strong vertical mixing induced by tides and winds acts to reduce surface warming. The performance of an ensemble of CMIP5 climate model in simulating recent seasonal changes of SST in the region is estimated. Seasonal changes in inorganic (NH4+; NO3-; NO2-) and organic (urea) nitrogen uptake were studied with N-15 as a tracer at a shallow station (depth: 22 m) in permanently well-mixed waters of the Western English Channel. Uptake of all the four nutrients was maximum in spring. Nitrate uptake accounted for a third of the total during spring phytoplankton growth, but decrease in summer. This decrease was related to the low ambient nitrate concentrations in early summer and to an inhibition of uptake by high concentrations in late summer.
